ACT ONE WRITING PROGRAMS

We’ve designed Act One’s Writing Programs for writers who take their Christian faith seriously and who want to engage the mainstream culture by telling stories in film and television that reflect a mastery of the craft of writing for the screen with an unusual quality of depth.  Becoming that kind of writer takes hard work.  And talent.  And time.  And a little world-class instruction doesn’t hurt.  That’s why Act One strives to provide the highest quality training in writing for the screen available anywhere.  We want to give our students more than information.  We want to give them the skills to compete with the best film and television writers in the world.  Here’s how we do it:

The SUMMER WRITING PROGRAM takes place over 30 intense days each summer in Hollywood, taught by our instructors of more than 40 writers, producers, directors and agents. The program builds a strong foundation in the craft and business of writing for Hollywood, with a challenging curriculum of close to 160 classroom hours covering story selection, structure, character, dialogue, theme, genre, format, writing loglines, beat sheets, treatments and outlines, pitching, the studio and independent film worlds, entertainment ethics and the spiritual challenges faced by Christians working in Hollywood.  An optional TV Track runs concurrently with the Writing Program and provides selected students with the skills and experience of the television writers’ room.  Following the month of classes, writers are paired with industry mentors for an additional five months of one-on-one interaction.  Class size is limited to approximately 30 students.  Includes a free script consultation.  Admission is competitive and by application only.  For program details, click here.

The SATURDAY WRITING PROGRAM takes place on Saturdays for eight months and brings the content of the acclaimed Summer Writing Program to writers living in Southern California, many of whom are already working in entertainment industry jobs and can’t take off a month in the summer.  This program includes an optional TV Track.  The extended length of the Saturday Writing Program makes it possible for each student to develop and write a feature screenplay under the direction of an Act One instructor.  Class size is limited to approximately 20 students.  Admission is competitive and by application only.  For program details, click here.

SCREENWRITING WEEKENDS bring some of the best of the Act One Writing Programs’ content to two-day conferences held in cities around the country.  Taught by Act One staff and instructors, Screenwriting Weekends are open to the public.  Click here for details and online registration.

ACT ONE SCRIPT CONSULTING provides in-depth analysis of film and television scripts to our alumni and the public.  Click here for details.
